A few comments on American Wool.
For years we’ve fielded calls from folks here in the US asking why not US wool, or stating they’re a grower and can we buy their wool for use in our products. The answer has always been the same: we’d love to use wool but we lack the scouring capacity to achieve the cleanliness required for our production process.
Vegetable matter (VM) is what is leftover in wool after it is cleaned (scoured). We source in NZ for a host of reasons. Chief among them: the kiwis are the best scours in the world. The wool we receive from NZ has roughly 0.1% VM. A similar best case in the US would be more like 1% or even 1.5% VM. That is 10x or more VM in American wool than NZ wool, post scour.
Despite these hard truths we’ve never given up on an interest to utilize US wool in our products.
We might be getting close due to some new realities in the global supply chain. In short, we are connecting dots between friends here and friends in NZ. As a very recent update, with any luck we will soon solve the US scouring problem and be able to introduce some US wool into our products.
