We are often asked:, "Why does sheep's wool insulation cost more than other types of insulation?"
It's a fair question.
Every insulation material is designed with different priorities in mind. Some are engineered to provide the lowest installed cost, others have evolved over 1000s of years to do the best possible job protecting animals from all elements: hot, cold, wet and dry. If these are the bookends of product options there is also optionality in the middle.
The right choice depends on what matters most to the homeowner.
Looking Beyond Price
When comparing insulation, it's easy to focus on R-value and price. Those are certainly important, but they don't tell the whole story. The importance of insulation is wildly overlooked in the built environment. Increasingly, considerations are growing to include moisture management, acoustics, sustainability and indoor air quality. We don't mention these characteristics solely because it is where wool excels. In fact, as building practices evolve so too does the need for high-performing insulation options. Wool is the ultimate insulative fiber. It does things no synthetic is capable of. These inherent characteristics are what drive the cost of the insulation.
Yes you pay more but it is also the definitive get what you pay for argument. Wool is the gift that keeps on giving as it manages moisture, improves indoor air quality, reduces sound transmission and adds to a healthy and comfortable living space.
Insulation Is a Long-Term Decision
Insulation is rarely, if ever, replaced. Once the walls are closed, it's expected to perform for decades. It is also typically 1.8% of construction costs. And yes all better materials cost more but higher performing insulation is a relative rounding error and very much a 1 time cost.
We are happy to share our views on the evolution of the importance of insulation. This has nothing to do with a vastly increased adoption of our products and everything to do with how much the industry is changing how many more curious minds there are today than say 10 years ago.
